![]() BakewellBakewell is a small town believed to have been founded by Anglo Saxons. It's name derives from the term 'Badeca's Well'. The town grew rapidly and by Norman times and was mentioned in the Doomsday book. Bakewell PuddingThe recipe for a Bakewell Pudding consists of a puff pastry case with a layer of jam. This is then covered with a topping of eggs, sugar, butter and almonds. Although the pudding can be traced back the medieval times, the local and folklaw story of it's creation is purely by accident. In the 1860s a nobleman visiting the White Horse Inn in Bakewell ordered a strawberry tart. In a panic, the chef spread the egg mixture on top of the tart instead of mixing it into the cake, therefore creating the Bakewell Pudding we know today. Over the years, the terms Bakewell Tart and Bakewell Pudding have become interchangable, although there are slight differences. Just be careful what you order for lunch when in the town of Bakewell!
