Loch Linnhe, Fort William

Fort William

The town of Fort William is situated close to the base of Ben Nevis. Over the years the town has moved from it's original location close to Inverlochy towards the Southern end of the Great Glen.

The Military and the Town

The fort was named "Fort William"' after William Of Orange, and the settlement that developed around it was originally known as "Maryburgh". Over the years to come, it took on a variety of names including "Gordonsburgh", and "Duncansburgh" before being named "Fort William".

During World War II, Fort William became the home of HMS St Christopher which was a training base for Royal Navy Coastal Forces.
